The 21st edition of the Cine Africano festival of Tarifa-Tangier (FCAT) opened on Saturday in Tangier, in a vibrant atmosphere.

The opening ceremony, which was held at the Alcazar cinema, brought together many cinema enthusiasts from Morocco and Spain.

On this occasion, the Franco-Senegalese film “Banel & Adama”, directed in 2013 by Ramata-Toulaye Sy, was screened to mark the opening of the festival.

This film, shot simultaneously in Tangier and Tarifa, was awarded at the Melbourne and Biarritz international film festivals in 2023. It was also selected at the 2023 Cannes festival.

The FCAT feature film competition includes twelve films, two of which represent Morocco, namely “Indivision” by director Leïla Kilani and “The Mother of All Lies” directed by Asmae El Mudir.

In the selection of short films at the festival, Morocco is represented by the comedy film “Bye Bye Benz Benz”, co-directed by Jules Rouffio and Mamoun Rtal Bennan.

This documentary explores the relationship of Kbir, one of the few drivers still attached to his old Mercedes 240, with the advent in 2016 of the scrappage program for old Moroccan taxis.

The FCAT is an event that aims to support African film projects by awarding them awards and facilitating contacts with distributors, distribution platforms and festival programmers.

In this sense, the winners will receive cash prizes and various production services.
