How did the production teams of Loft Story, the first reality TV show in history, experience the famous swimming pool sequence between Jean-Edouard and Loana?
In 2001, reality TV made a sensational entry into the PAF with the first show of its kind to be broadcast in France: “Loft Story”. Broadcast live 24 hours a day on a cable channel and the internet and summarized every evening on M6 which also devoted a bonus to it every week, its first season had particularly marked the spirits, and one scene in particular, that known as “the swimming pool” .
In this sequence, which some would prefer everyone to forget, two somewhat tipsy candidates indulged in frolics in the swimming pool… Kisses, Loana and Jean-Edouard had in fact gone towards much more, forgetting the 26 cameras aimed at them. A great first in the PAF which caused a scandal at the time.
As reported by an investigation by Society magazine, in management, the production team did not immediately understand what was happening and the media (and audience) tidal wave that it was going to cause. arouse. At the production, two atmospheres: journalists chanted the name of the young man “Jean-Edouard! Jean-Edouard!”, while producer Alexia Laroche-Joubert remained speechless, in shock. “I understood that the Internet existed with the swimming pool scene,” the latter had confided to Society. That night, Angela [Lorente, l’autre productrice, ndlr] is behind the cameras, I’m in front of the screens and we don’t understand. We are frozen.”
By the time we decided to cut the broadcast or not, it was already too late. “I said to myself: ‘There’s something called the Internet, I have to press a button, because the image I’m seeing is passing through something. By the time I realized it, the images were gone. We weren’t prepared at all. We were dried out.”
