He is one of the most famous illusionists in the world. American conjurer David Copperfield, 67 years old today, is accused of sexual violence by sixteen women, reported Wednesday May 15 Guardian. “More than half of the allegations come from women who said they were under 18 at the time of the incident,” adds the British newspaper.

To carry out its investigation – which covers a period from the end of the 1980s to 2014 – the American edition of Guardian explains having interviewed more than 100 people, and consulted police and court files. The media also specifies that the women who accuse David Copperfield “met him through his work as one of the most successful artists in the world.”

Three say they were drugged

Among the women interviewed, three assure that the magician drugged them before having sexual relations, to which they believe they could not have consented. Others accuse the 1990s star of touching on stage during his shows. For their part, David Copperfield’s lawyers informed the newspaper that their client denied any offense and had not “never behaved inappropriately with anyone, let alone a minor.”

Another woman, under a pseudonym, claims that she met the ever-present Las Vegas star when she was only 15 years old. In subsequent years, he would call her late at night and send gifts, she said, believing that he had been “conditioned”. When she turned 18, they had consensual sex, she continued. Here again, David Copperfield’s lawyers have indicated that the magician denies “firmly reject any idea of conditioning or any other misconduct”. Before adding that the two had a legal and consensual relationship which lasted four years.

According to Guardianinvestigation “highlighted common themes among the accusations: several women said that Copperfield promised to help them with their modeling careers or in the entertainment industry and that he tried to stay in touch with them and their parents”.

Already accused of sexual assault in 2018

This is not the first time that the illusionist, notably known for having made the Statue of Liberty disappear, has been implicated. In 2018, former American model Brittney Lewis had already accused him of sexual assault. The latter, who also spoke to Guardian, claims to have been drugged and sexually assaulted three decades earlier, when she was a minor. At the time, David Copperfield denied these accusations.

The magician’s name is also among those listed in court documents relating to the case of Jeffrey Epstein, the American financier accused of sex crimes and trafficking, who committed suicide in prison in 2019 before he could be tried. The fact that David Copperfield’s name appears there, however, does not imply that he engaged in illegal or reprehensible behavior. “Our client was unaware of the appalling crimes committed by Epstein,” assured his lawyers of the conjurer in the columns of Guardian.
