Sixteen women accuse magician David Copperfield of ‘sexual misconduct’ and inappropriate behavior

A Guardian US investigation implicates a former magic star. The media reports the words of sixteen women, who accuse David Copperfield, 67, of “sexual misconduct and inappropriate behavior”. More than half of the potential victims claimed to be under 18 years old at the time of the events, which allegedly took place between 1980 and 2014.

The women concerned say they met the illusionist as part of his activity. He is notably accused of having had sexual relations with three of them after having drugged them. Relationships to which they obviously would not have been able to consent, according to their testimonies given to the Guardian.

Some of them told the media that they felt ready to talk about these alleged actions thanks to the #MeToo movement. The famous magician had already been publicly accused in the past. In 2018, The Wrap published the testimony of Brittney Lewis, who claimed to have been drugged and then sexually assaulted by David Copperfield.

Sexual assault during shows?

The latter has always denied having committed any wrongdoing. His lawyers told the Guardian that their client had “never acted inappropriately with anyone, let alone a minor.” They added that the magician supported #MeToo by encouraging victims to come forward.

In four other cases, women claimed to have been touched by the conjurer or to have been forced to touch him during a performance. Three of them were teenagers at the time of the events described. Fallon Thornton assured the Guardian that David Copperfield squeezed his chest during a 2014 show at a casino hotel. Las Vegas police said they closed the complaint due to insufficient evidence.

Another pattern repeated itself between the different victims’ accusations. Some explained that David Copperfield would have promised to promote their careers in modeling or show business. He would have tried to keep in touch with them and their parents.

The illusionist was also cited in documents published around the Epstein affair last January. According to testimony, he performed magic tricks in one of the residences of the sexual predator who died in prison in 2019.
