The 33-year-old singer performed, donated five guitars and gave a speech during his unexpected visit to Fairlight Primary School in East Sussex, Britain, last week. His visit was planned by Create Music, an initiative promoting inclusive music and arts education in the country.

Fairlight principal Damien Jordan revealed that staff and students were not expecting it and that he himself only found out the day before.

“I was told a famous singer wanted to see the school’s music lessons,” he told the BBC. “I joked with the kids that I invited my friend, and Ed Sheeran was there.”

Amused, Damien Jordan also said to himself that the star would perhaps not be the last to perform at school. “Taylor Swift will be here next week, then Beyoncé the week after that,” he joked.

Photographer Sadie Avard immortalized the event and was touched by the singer’s “inspiring” words. “Ed gave a very inspiring speech that resonated with my own experience at school,” she said. “His main message was that you should not let yourself become disillusioned with school if you did not meet the expectations of school life. Don’t let this stop you from pursuing the things you love and making it your career.”

And added: “You have to take inspiration from others in the industry and work even harder than them to become the best.”
