The new film adaptation of the video game series Mortal Kombat had particularly attracted attention when its first trailer was revealed, which turned out to be as bloody and brutal as fans could hope for.

Unfortunately, the final product did not quite live up to expectations, reserving a few moments worthy of mention, but scattered within a film whose development, direction and editing had ironically tends to lack punch.

Many also criticized the film for being nothing more than a long introduction to the film they really wanted to see.

Fortunately for the latter, the green light for the production of a second film was given a few months later, and we now know when we will be treated to more mortal combat and executions rich in dismemberment and bloodshed: on October 24, 2025.

This in itself is a great release date for such a proposition. Moreover, Mortal Kombat 2 will also be entitled to a broadcast on IMAX screens, for those who like to watch their sequences of violence in “super big”as RBO once said.

Remember that Simon McQuoid returned to direct for this second go-round, filming of which has already been completed, while the screenplay was entrusted this time to Jeremy Slater, better known for his work on the series. Moon Knight from Marvel Studios and the recent Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

In the credits, Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim, Mehcad Brooks and Hiroyuki Sanada all reprise their respective roles. The most notable addition remains that of Karl Urban, who will play the egocentric and “Vandammesque” Johnny Cage.

Although it was released in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, in spring 2021, Mortal Kombat still managed to accumulate revenues of more than $84 million worldwide. Above all, the feature film left its mark on the HBO Max platform, finishing first among the most viewed films during that same year.
