“Returned” cinema and stars in spades, a very open jury and Palmes d’Honneur for several icons of the 7th art… The spotlight will once again be on the Croisette, from this Tuesday, May 14 and until May 25 .

We weren’t necessarily expecting them on the red carpet, but they will indeed be there. Filmmaker of On the path to redemption and screenwriter of Taxi DriverPaul Schrader will reveal Oh, Canada, a drama starring Richard Gere and Uma Thurman. The seducer of Pretty Woman, now aged 74, will play a recognized documentary filmmaker who has revealed several cases of corruption, who agrees to grant an interview even though he is suffering from incurable cancer. Another “forgotten” star, Demi Moore will also be present in competition, since she is starring in the horrific The Substance by French director Coralie Fargeat, noticed in 2018 with Revenge.

The jury

Chaired by Greta Gerwig, the competition jury is focusing more than ever on diversity. It is therefore difficult to know what trend will emerge on May 25, during the closing ceremony. Around the director of barbiewe will find the screenwriter Ebru Ceylan (wife of Nuri Bilge Ceylan, many times awarded on the Croisette), the actresses Lily Gladstone (revealed in Killers of the Flower Moon by Martin Scorsese) and Eva Green as well as Nadine Labaki (Capernaum). They will debate with four men. In this case the filmmakers Juan Antonio Bayona (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) and Kore-Eda Hirokazu (palmed for A family matter), the actor Pierfrancesco Favino (The traitorby Marco Bellocchio), without omitting Omar Sy.

The Palms of Honor

It became a habit. While in the past a Palme d’Or rewarded an artistic work, each year Palmes d’honor celebrate personalities from the 7th art. This Tuesday evening, during the opening ceremony, the essential Meryl Streep will receive the precious sesame which will be added to her three Oscars, obtained for Kramer vs. Kramer, Sophie’s Choice And Iron Woman. The festival is delighted with her presence, recalling that the actress “has spanned nearly 50 years of cinema and is part of our collective imagination, of our common cinephilia“.

During the tenth anniversary, the distinction will also be given to Studio Ghibli, dear to Hayao Miyazaki and to whom we owe animated masterpieces like Princess Mononoke And Spirited away. The opportunity to pay homage to a genre that is too often forgotten in this type of event.

Finally, during the closing, it is the creator of Star Wars, Mr. George Lucas, who will be in the spotlight.

Simultaneous outputs

It is now a tradition: the opening film must be released simultaneously in cinemas in France. It is therefore up to the spectators to discover, starting this evening, The Second Act by the prolific Quentin Dupieux. A comedy about cinema that brings together Léa Seydoux, Vincent Lindon, Raphaël Quenard and Louis Garrel. Two other proposals – and not the least – presented in Cannes will be on display on May 22. Furiosa: A Mad Max Sagawhere George Miller signs a prequel on theaction woman now played by Anya Taylor-Joy, and Marcello Mio by Christophe Honoré. A project with a very original concept since Chiara Mastroianni tries to relive the life of her father, Marcello Mastroianni… Which will not fail to surprise those around her, starting with her mother, a certain Catherine Deneuve.

Stars in number

In addition to the aforementioned stars, a number of personalities are expected on the red carpet. In disorder, Selena Gomez, Emma Stone, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Vincent Lacoste, Alain Chabat, François Civil, Ben Whishaw, Adam Driver, Francis Ford Coppola, Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger and David Cronenberg will present a film in competition.

In the other sections, Laetitia Dosch, Chris Hemsworth, Noémie Merlant, Anaïs Demoustier, Nicolas Cage, Benjamin Lavernhe, Anamaria Vartolomei, Daniel Auteuil and Victor Belmondo will delight festival-goers with their presence. Without forgetting many guests, ready to reinforce the glamorous aspect of the event
