Created for compete with the Venice Film Festival, at the time under fascist influence, the Cannes Festival was born in 1939. The desire of Jean Zay, Minister of National Education, and Philippe Erlanger, diplomat representing France at the Mostra, was to create a festival which celebrates international cinema in complete freedom. The Second World War delayed their plans and it was not until 1947 that the first edition of the Festival took place.

The aim of the Festival is to encourage the development of cinematic art in all its forms and to create and maintain a spirit of collaboration between all film-producing countries.

Regulations of the Cannes Film Festival in 1948.

Since the 1950s, the principle has almost remained unchanged. The Festival is a twenty films (The number fluctuates depending on the year) screened for around ten days in May in front of cinema professionals. A jury made up of around ten people from the cinema industry (directors, actors, screenwriters, etc.) must then decide to which film it will award the most prestigious prize of the festival: Golden Palm.

Each year, Chopard produces all of the awards awarded by the Festival, including the most prestigious of them: the Palme d’Or.

The people who select films for the Cannes Film Festival classify them in several categories. All of these categories are called “The Official Selection”.

A selection which breaks down as follows:

  • The official competition

It has around twenty feature films. Only these films are in the running for the Palme d’Or.

  • Other prizes reward the official competition: the Grand Prize, the Jury Prize, the male and female acting prizes, the directing prize and the screenplay prize.
  • Prices may vary depending on the wishes of the jury.

This year, the jury is chaired by Greta Gerwig (We also help you get to know her better!). The 8 members of the jury are : American actress Lily Gladstonepresented last year for Killers of the Flower Moonthe Franco-British actress Eva GreenFrench actor and producer Omar Sythe Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favinothe Japanese director Kore-Eda Hirokazuthe Lebanese director and screenwriter Nadine Labakithe Spanish director, producer and screenwriter Juan Antonio Bayonaand the Turkish screenwriter and photographer Ebru Ceylon.

>> Un Certain Regard

In this category, we often find beginner filmmakers or experienced ones who make more unique films at certain moments in their career.

An Un Certain Regard jury rewards the best film in this selection. This year, it is the Canadian director, screenwriter, producer and actor Xavier Dolan who is at the helm. He announced last summer that he was ending his career at just 34 years old and after 8 feature films. He is particularly known for Mommy awarded a César and a Jury Prize at Cannes in 2014 and Just the End of the Worldgrand jury prize in 2016.

>> The Golden Camera prize rewards the best first film in all selections, including those of the Critics’ Week and the Filmmakers’ Fortnight.

There is a specific jury for this prize. In 2024, it is chaired by Spanish director and screenwriter Rodrigo Sorogoyen.

>> Around twenty short films are also selected. A special jury chaired by Belgian actress Lubna Azabal will award the Palme d’Or for short film.

>> Regularly, an honorary Palme d’Or can be awarded to a cinema personality for their entire career. In 2024, actress Meryl Streep will receive this Palm of Honor during the opening ceremony this Tuesday, May 14.

The Cannes Film Festival is reserved for cinema professionals. This includes the people who make the films, distribute them, produce them, but also journalists.

However, it is possible for certain people who do not do these jobs to access a few sessions.

For example, Cannes residents can participate in a draw to win places for screenings during the Festival.
