Bernard Pivot, died at age 89, in Neuilly-Sur-Seine (Hauts-de-Seine) on May 6, 2024, will be buried in the village of Quincié-en-Beaujolais (Rhône), near Lyon. His funeral will take place on Tuesday May 14, 2024 at 2:30 p.m., indicate two notices published in Le Figaro, one from his family and in particular his children and a second from the members of the Goncourt academy which he chaired. Both specify that “a tribute will be paid to him later” in Paris, without specifying the date or content.

Roots in the Rhône and a professional life in Paris

The journalist, writer and television man will be buried in the family vault of Quincié-en-Beaujolais in accordance with his wishes, according to the mayor of the village, cited by Le Figaro.

“I will come back to Quincié as long as life allows me. Then I know that a place awaits me in the cemetery in my parents’ grave. I know I will be buried in Quincié. It’s not sad to think about it, I’m not immortal,” declared the former president of the Académie Goncourt in 2018, speaking of his wishes.

But Paris is also an integral part of his life. If his roots and his young years were in the Rhône, it was in the capital that he studied journalism at the CFJ where he met Monique Dupuis who would become his wife. And it is then in Paris that his professional career will take place with of course Apostrophes.

Paris still with the Goncourt Academy which he presided over and meals at the famous Drouant restaurant, a historic place in the capital if ever there was one, which has hosted the Goncourt Prize ceremony since 1914, rue Gaillon, near the Opéra Garnier .

Bernard Pivot was the first non-writer to have his napkin ring there.
