More than 200 records produced, 40 years of career… Steve Albini was a true rock icon, known for having been a producer of the greatest. He died this Tuesday, May 7, 2024 of a heart attack, the Pitchfork site announced this Wednesday. He was 61 years old.

Among the greatest successes of the American, born in California: the production of dozens of iconic rock albums, notably In utero of Nirvana, Surfer Rosa Pixies, or even Rid of Me by PJ Harvey.

He was “a recording studio legend,” as Pitchfork reports, and preferred the term engineer rather than producer. He was known for being uncompromising and having a very advanced sound technique.

He was also the guitarist and singer himself for the band Shellac, who were due to release a new album next week, titled To All Trains.

In Europe, he was known for having produced French groups like Dionysos and Sloy.
