The idea

You won’t see large-scale paintings or sculptures there. Rather works with miniature dimensions, adapted to this exhibition setting like no other. This new space dedicated to contemporary art, in Lorient (Morbihan), is The White Cube.

As its name suggests, a 1 m white frame2, embedded, 30 cm deep, in one of the walls of the Bar d’En Face (the BDF). The idea, original, did not appear out of nowhere. A trigger implemented by Léa Vitally, alumnus of the Lorient art school and member of the pub team. Also author (1) and photographer. “The BDF team, smiles Léa, is rather connected to art, music and photography. Marion, Axel and I come from EESAB. We wanted to give space to the creation of emerging artists, without changing the nature and soul of the place. »

A cube to configure

The solution therefore lies in this White Cubea somewhat separate and protected space, where artists will exhibit at a regular tempo. “Four weeks of exhibition time per artist, explains Léa, in very different registers: painting, sculpture, volumes, drawing, engraving, photography or video. » A niche, a small artistic wasteland, to invest in by adapting your practice to the miniature dimensions of the White Cube. A performance ? “All the artists who will exhibit here in 2024 (and 2025, since Léa is already working there), love this idea and this format. They adapt and offer works designed, sized for the White Cube “.

A performance ? “That was the idea, slips Léa in a wink. Our place loves performances. THE White Cube surprises but pleases enormously. You can configure it as you wish. » A window of creativity where it is good to lean in without moderation…
