In Cavaillon, there will be a before and an after Hofesh Shechter

It’s what ?

An exalted and engaged contemporary dance performance, with magnanimous importance given to sound. The spectator is taken as if into a trance, inhabited by the explosive movements performed by eight dancers under 25 years old. It is a declaration of love from the choreographer Hofesh Shechter to England, where his company has been based since 2008. In this creation there is punk fury from across the Channel and the absolute sense of romanticism with a treacherous sauce. Albion.

Who is it ?

He will turn 50 in a few months. Hofesh Shechter is this Israeli choreographer considered one of the current leaders of contemporary dance in the world. Trained as a dancer at the legendary Batsheva Dance Company (with his master Ohad Naharin), he has been acclaimed everywhere for twenty years. Among his main choreographies, “In your rooms” created in London, approximately at the time when he was setting up his troupe in the British capital. Shechter lovers cite Naharin but also Pina Bausch among the artists following whom the quasi-quinqua is inscribed.

The general public discovered him in 2022 thanks to Cédric Klapish’s film “En corps”, for which he choreographed the dance scenes. The scenes of jubilation at the edge of the cliff or the rehearsal in the studio while Denis Podalydès is looking for a toilet, remain both unforgettable sequences of dance and cinema/

How is it?

In addition to the superlatives inherent to those who have seen a show by this genius choreographer once in their life, the Shechter style is above all the strength of verticality.

The bodies, placed under permanent tension, bludgeon the ground with subtlety, crawl, are undeniably beaten by contrary winds, before coming to rest, in a slow-motion spirituality which leaves its mark on the spirits.

Theatricality and expressiveness constitute two crucial axioms of the artist, who manages to speak to both specialists and neophytes of contemporary dance. With him, emotions swirl.

Where and when is it?

At La Garance, National Stage. Initially, Garance and its partner for this show, the Grand opera house, had scheduled two performances on October 8 and 9.

Alas, the two performances were quickly full (1,000 performances) in total, so much so that a third session was added on October 9 in the afternoon (for which the last places have just sold out).

A total of 1,500 privileged people will therefore be able to attend this show.

This is Chloé Tournier’s third season at La Garance and it is the first time that the opening of the box office this summer has aroused such enthusiasm, whether for “From England with love” or for the other shows of the season. .

It is said

When Hofesh Shechter speaks, you immediately listen: “I expect my dancers to be able to adapt to everything, but to remain very present to themselves, in full possession of their ‘humanity’. Only then the emotion will be able to pass to the spectator.” (in “Télérama”).

“From England with love” on October 8 and 9 at La Garance, Cavaillon; complete, the Garance season can be found on the site: www.lagarance.com
