“The braid”: “When you swim among sharks, it’s better not to bleed”

Adapted from the best-seller by Laetitia Colombani, the film “La tresse” has just been released on blue Video. A moving feature film that follows the journey of three women around the world.

A real success, Laetitia Colombani’s film was a hit at the box office, exceeding 1,200,000 admissions.

Three women, three destinies. Smita in India, Guila in Italy and Sarah in Quebec are immersed in a very different reality and daily life.

While Smita fights to free her daughter from her Untouchable condition, Guila tries to save the family wig manufacturing business and Sarah, the careerist lawyer, fights cancer.

At first glance, nothing connects these women except their fight to improve their lives and achieve their goals with strength and passion. I had read the book “The Braid” and I loved it. So I was boiling with impatience at the idea of discovering the film made by the author herself.

Despite my positive preconceptions, it took me a while to get into the plot and become attached to the characters of Smita, Guila and Sarah. My advice ? Hold on, once the first thirty minutes have passed, there’s no stopping.

Unlike the book where the character of Sarah can seem cold, the film paints a most touching portrait of this long-toothed lawyer who must review her ambitions when she learns that she has breast cancer.

“Being born a girl here is a curse”

Played by the wonderful Kim Raver who we saw in “24” and “Grey’s Anatomy”, Sarah manages to move us in this journey strewn with pitfalls during which she will question her priorities.

“When you’re swimming among sharks, it’s better not to bleed,” she admits as she tries to hide her illness from her colleagues at the famous firm that employs her. I shared his tears, his emotions pierced me.

The Indian part draws its strengths from its breathtaking landscapes and the mission of a mother who fights for her daughter to carve out a destiny other than the one that awaits her.

Because yes, in India: “Being born a girl here is a curse” as Smita recognizes. As for the story of Giulia, it moves us with its strong and persevering heroine who rebels against the conventions and traditions of her country.

“Life sometimes brings the darkest and brightest moments together” writes Laetitia Colombani. Like the book, we understand at the end what connects these three women. If you need a good dose of humanity, tenderness and human warmth, don’t hesitate for a single second to immerse yourself in “The Braid”.
