Charles III “in a terrible state”: the death of Lady Di was a blow to him, revelations by Stéphane Bern

It was almost thirty years ago… On August 31, 1997, at just 36 years old, Lady Diana lost her life in a terrible road accident in . She left behind two sons: Prince William, then aged 15, and Prince Harry, 12. Although the woman nicknamed the People’s Princess had been separated from Charles III for five years at the time of her death, her disappearance deeply upset her ex-husband, as reported by Stéphane Bern.

Tuesday, September 17, 2024, on the set of TV Mag’s Buzz TV, the specialist in crowned heads first assured that everything was not
“not exact” in the series The Crown. “In a divorce, as you know, there is 50% of the fault on one side and the other. Stéphane Bern: “A sensitive and torn man”

Moved, Stéphane Bern explained: “Even though they were divorced, he was crying, he was in a terrible state… It’s the ex-husband who comes to collect the body of his ex-wifethere are few cases where it happens like this. He loves his children so much…”. According to the presenter, Charles III would be “a sensitive and torn man”. “That’s what The Crown doesn’t really show.”he regretted.

A few years earlier, Penny Judor, a biographer of the royal family, had recounted how Charles III had learned of the death of his ex-wife. In London, he would have “decomposed” upon learning of the accident. The biographer assures that he then said: “Everyone’s going to say it’s my fault, right?”before sliding: “We’re going to see a reaction like we’ve never seen before. And it could destroy everything. The monarchy could fall.”.

Prince Harry: “It was a lot for him”

In his memoir, The Substitute, the Duke of Sussex revealed how he reacted when he learned of his mother’s accident. Remembering that his father had made a tender gesture towards him, he wrote: “He sat on the edge of the bed. He put a hand on my knee. ‘My dear boy, mommy had a car accident’.

As he struggled to understand what had happened, Prince Harry added in his book: I remember thinking: accident…OK. But is she okay?
Yes? I remember that thought going through my mind very well. And I remember waiting patiently for Dad to confirm that Mom was okay. And I remember he didn’t. He put his hand on my knee and said, ‘It’s going to be okay.’ It was a lot for him. Fatherly, hopeful, kind. But so wrong.”
