A high-altitude birth that has all the makings of a small feat. This Sunday, September 1st, a 19-year-old woman gave birth while hiking, at an altitude of 1725m in the Hautes-Pyrénées. 7 months pregnant and countingi, she had gone walking with six members of her family at Lake Gaube, in Cauterets, as reported by France Bleu. The future mother, originally from New Caledonia, felt strong contractions. It is the father who took it upon himself to help his wife give birth by lighting a fire and boiling water. The mother and child, in good health, were transferred to the hospital in Tarbes after the family was able to contact emergency services around 5:30 a.m. via the satellite network.

Rescuers find the young woman with her baby in her arms

The CRS officers dispatched had some difficulty finding the family. due to the deleterious climate. The helicopter was unable to take off, so three rescuers went up on foot, later joined by a doctor from the emergency services. They finally arrived at 7:30 a.m. and found the young woman, with her baby in her arms. “The group had taken tarpaulins to shelter themselvesbecause the weather was not great” explains Brigadier-Chief Pierre Foltier, who was part of the rescue services, to RTL, before continuing; “It was cold, it was raining. There was a risk of hypothermia for the baby and hemorrhage for the mother.”
