Hunter Biden is seeking to resolve his federal tax fraud charges in California by offering a special plea deal in which he maintains his innocence while accepting a sentence, his lawyers announced Thursday, just before jury selection was scheduled to begin, CNN reports.
In the United States, this type of plea, called an “Alford Plea,” could allow Hunter Biden to acknowledge that special prosecutor David Weiss has enough evidence to convict him, while accepting the sentence that Judge Mark Scarsi decides. The latter will have to approve this arrangement in a public hearing.
Opposition from the Special Prosecutor’s Office
“I think it can be resolved today,” said Abbe Lowell, Hunter Biden’s attorney. However, prosecutors on David Weiss’s team have voiced opposition to the plea. As for Leo Wise, assistant special counsel, he said it was the first he had heard of such a change in plea.
