Cases in Haute-Vienne, the Bellac national fair cancelled

blue tongue disease – Following the prefectural decree prohibiting the gathering of animals linked to the detection of cases of bluetongue, the Bellac sheep fair on Thursday September 5 has been cancelled

This Wednesday, the Bellac sheep genetics crossroads (Haute-Vienne) announced the cancellation of its 61st fair, which connects breeders and buyers of quality rams. It was due to open this Thursday, but cases of bluetongue (FCO), or blue tongue disease, led the prefect to issue an order prohibiting the gathering of animals for health reasons.

A vaccination campaign is underway

As of August 29, 342 outbreaks were recorded by the Ministry of Agriculture in France. A targeted voluntary vaccination campaign was launched on Monday, August 12 for implementation until December 31, 2024 and the vaccination area has been expanded (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Pays-de-la-Loire, as well as to the departments of Ille-et-Vilaine, Deux-Sèvres, Vienne, Haute-Vienne, Creuse and Corrèze.)

Bluetongue is a viral disease affecting domestic (sheep, cattle, goats) and wild ruminants. Although it does not affect humans and has no impact on the health quality of foodstuffs (meat, milk, etc.), the economic repercussions can be significant. They can lead to high animal mortality and even the closure of markets.(…) - 20minutes
