Polaris Dawn, the mission with a “first private extra-vehicular activity”, will (finally!) take off

It had been postponed by one day to August 26, 2024, then, the next day, “to an undetermined date”: the takeoff of the SpaceX rocket for the unprecedented Polaris Dawn space mission – including the first private extra-vehicular activity in history – will finally take place on Friday, September 6, the American authorities announced on Tuesday.

Multiple postponements

An optimal four-hour launch window is set to open at 03:33 (0733 GMT) Friday from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida… with other possibilities the following Saturday and Sunday (September 7 and 8), according to the US aviation regulator (FAA).

As a reminder, the Polaris Dawn mission, which carries a billionaire, a pilot and two SpaceX employees, had already been postponed by 24 hours after the detection, on August 26, of a “helium leak” on a connection powering the rocket. It was postponed again the next day due to “unfavorable weather forecasts.”

“To infinity and beyond”

The trip is intended to test SpaceX’s very first spacesuits, which are white and have a decidedly futuristic look. The extra-vehicular activity, which promises to be spectacular, should be broadcast live during the third(…) - 20minutes
