From the platform for “geeks” to 10 million subscribers, Netflix celebrates its tenth anniversary in France

TA-DAM!!! – The platform now claims “more than 278 million paying users in over 190 countries”

Is it the “other” American landing that has forever changed our cultural habits? The fact remains that on September 15, 2014, almost ten years ago, Netflix, the “mastodon” video streaming platform, arrived in France… for better or for worse!

Amazing growth

The company, which in 1997 was just an online DVD rental and purchase service, claimed, upon its arrival in France, “more than 48 million subscriber households in over 40 countries” (today “more than 278 million paying users in over 190 countries”, market leader).

She immediately offered original and explosive programs in the French audiovisual landscape, such as Orange is the new black or House of cards

Reluctant French operators…

“A sufficient reality” for Canal+ to polish CanalPlay Infinity (video on demand platform, 2011-2019), Philippe Bailly, president of the NPA consultancy firm, explains to AFP.

“We must not let the wolf into the sheepfold” was what we heard at the time from “certain telecom operators”, recalls Capucine Cousin, economic journalist at L’Agefi and author of Netflix, Amazon, Disney & Co., the battle of the new audiovisual titans (Dunod editions).
