Under pressure from the far right, Berlin extends controls to all its borders

IMMIGRATION – Controls with France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark will be established for six months from September 16

The rise of the far right in Germany is a blow to the Schengen area. To combat illegal immigration, Olaf Scholz’s government announced on Monday that it would introduce controls at all of its borders.

Controls with France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark will be established for six months from September 16. They will be added to those with Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria and Switzerland.

A “hard line against illegal immigration”

“We continue to apply our hard line against irregular immigration,” Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said. Her ministry said it had informed the European Union authorities, as these are exceptional measures that deviate from the rules of free movement in the Schengen area.

Berlin considers these provisions necessary for “the protection of internal security against the current threats of Islamist terrorism and cross-border crime.”

This hardening could, however, strain relations between Germany and its neighbours, especially since the ruling coalition also declared on Monday that it wanted to increase the number of migrants turned back at the German borders. Austria(…) - 20minutes
