“A dream come true”… Taylor Fritz is the first American in a Grand Slam final since 2009

TENNIS – The 26-year-old player managed to beat his compatriot Frances Tiafoe in five sets at the US Open on Friday, giving American tennis its first Major final since Andy Roddick in 2009.

The semi-finals of the 2024 US Open will undoubtedly be remembered for this crazy sequence of a sick Jack Draper vomiting on the court in the middle of the second set against the tournament favourite Jannik Sinner. In the midst of physical struggles on Friday in New York, the Briton offered relative resistance to the world number one (7-5, 7-6, 6-2), even if the latter complained of wrist pain. The real uncertain clash took place in the other semi-final, with an all-American battle lasting 3 hours and 18 minutes between Taylor Fritz (12th) and Frances Tiafoe (20th).

In five hard-fought sets (4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1), it was finally Taylor Fritz (26 years old), never a semi-finalist in a Grand Slam until then, who reached the final at Flushing Meadow. The performance is symbolically important for US tennis since Taylor Fritz becomes the first American to reach the final of a men’s Major… since Andy Roddick in 2009 at Wimbledon!
