Recap’ – The new Prime Minister succeeded Gabriel Attal and made his very first speech this Thursday

He promised “changes and ruptures”. Michel Barnier, the new Prime Minister, is the new tenant of Matignon. The former Brexit negotiator, aged 73, gave his very first speech in this position this Thursday, late afternoon, during the transfer of power with Gabriel Attal. But what can we remember from this speech? 20 Minutes takes stock for you.

A desire to dialogue and to “listen”

Michel Barnier explained that he wanted to “find solutions with all those who want to resolve the country’s many and deep difficulties”. He insisted on “all those”, implicitly referring to the National Rally, which did not oppose his nomination, while the 73-year-old did not support the Republican barrier during the last legislative elections.

To achieve these “solutions”, he estimated that “a lot of listening” and “respect for all the political forces that are represented” will be needed, a new nod to the far-right party that holds the keys to a possible censure of his government. The new occupant of Matignon also quoted his mother, just like Gabriel Attal a few minutes earlier: “Sectarianism is a sign of weakness. When you are sectarian, it is because you are not sure of your ideas.”

A dig (or two) at Gabriel Attal
