A one-year-old girl was seriously injured in the face after being bitten by the family dog, an American Staffordshire, on Monday September 2 in Villers-Saint-Paul (Oise), BFMTV.com learned from Loïc Abrial, public prosecutor of Senlis, confirming information from the Courrier Picard.

“Serious facial injuries” were observed on the child who was evacuated to the Amiens hospital. The little girl’s life is not in danger, the public prosecutor said.

The child’s mother, aged 25, was “seriously injured on the hand by bites attributed to the same animal” while trying “to help her daughter during the attack”, the magistrate said in a press release. She was also transported to Amiens hospital.

Child’s father in custody

An investigation into “unintentional injuries caused by an attack by a dog” was opened by the public prosecutor’s office and entrusted to the local judicial police department of Creil following the attack which took place at the family home on Monday 2 September in the early afternoon.

The child’s father, “presumed owner of the animal”, was taken into custody. Aged 23, he is known to the courts.

“Probably absent at the time of the bites, he admitted that he had not carried out the formalities required for the possession of this type of animal, while indicating that his dog did not usually have aggressive behavior,” said Loïc Abrial.

The father’s custody was temporarily lifted during the day on Monday, September 2 by the public prosecutor’s office “so that he could go to his injured daughter’s bedside,” the magistrate continued, specifying that the dog had been placed in the pound. “Investigations are continuing to determine the precise circumstances of the attack as well as the exact status of the dog,” concluded Loïc Abrial.
