HONG KONG – Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific said Wednesday it expects to return to normal operations by Saturday after identifying the problem on its Airbus A350s.

Hong Kong airline Cathay Pacific is expected to return to normal on Saturday after cancelling 90 flights between Monday and Saturday. It has identified 15 of its Airbus A350s as requiring new fuel lines to the engines, according to inspections.

The airline has grounded 48 of its aircraft for safety reasons after a Zurich-bound plane was forced to turn back to Hong Kong on Monday.

The company said it had identified “an engine component failure” made by Rolls-Royce. “This component is the first of its kind to fail on an A350 aircraft worldwide,” it said. “Fifteen aircraft” have “engine fuel lines” that need replacing, and “six of these have already undergone successful repairs and are ready for use,” the company said. The remaining nine aircraft will also be repaired and are expected to return to service “by Saturday,” Cathay Pacific added.
