Archaeology – A new prospecting campaign is underway off the coast of Saint-Malo to try to locate the carcass of the ship, which sank with 140 men on board between April 10 and 14, 1645.

It was returning from distant lands, probably from the Pacific coast of South America, with a precious cargo in its holds. After this long expedition, the Victor unfortunately never reached its home port of Saint-Malo. Between April 10 and 14, 1645, the ship sank off the coast after probably hitting a rock, sinking in the waters of the English Channel with nearly 140 men on board. Long forgotten, this shipwreck resurfaced a few years ago with the discovery of an archive document mentioning its loss “on the coast of Saint-Briac”, a stone’s throw from the corsair city.

In this veritable marine cemetery that is the bay of Saint-Malo, in which lie several hundred wrecks, the clue seemed a little thin. But there was at least one clue, thus tickling the curiosity of Gérard Bousquet. A wreck hunter in his free time, the latter has long explored the world’s seas in search of submerged remains. In 2005, he therefore set off on board his boat on the trail of the Victor, probing the seabed using a magnetometer.
