Fitbit and Apple Watch: high levels of E.Coli bacteria detected on bracelets

You must regularly disinfect your Fitbit or Apple Watch type watch, researchers have hammered after high levels of bacteria colonies detected on the bracelets during a study.

“The amount and taxonomy of bacteria found on the wristbands shows that there is a need for regular disinfection of these surfaces,” hammered the lead author of the study, Dr. Nwadiuto Esiobu, from Florida Atlantic University, according to “The Telegraph” Thursday.

The study was carried out on about twenty watches collected at random from men and women from various fields, including firefighters, veterinarians, office workers and even gym enthusiasts, said the researcher at the head. of the team.

However, it would have revealed a high level presence of E.coli in 60% of cases, of Staphylococcus, the cause of numerous infections, particularly of the skin, in 85% of cases, and of Pseudomonas, which can infect the blood or lungs, on a third of the watches.

While these three types of bacteria are found naturally on human skin and would be harmless in the majority of cases, they can become dangerous when exposed to injury, the newspaper said.

For this reason, health professionals and those in the presence of immunocompromised people should pay particular attention to properly disinfecting their watches, and this, on a regular basis, continued the researcher, who is of the opinion that headphones and cell phones should also be studied in this way.

“Porous and static wristbands tend to attract bacteria”, added the researcher, indicating that fabric bands would be the most populous in terms of bacteria, followed by plastic, rubber, leather and then metal. The gold bracelets would have antimicrobial properties, concluded the British media.
