An even better equipped cancer center in Montérégie

Its installation completes the project to replace two linear accelerators with state-of-the-art models. The acquisition of these two devices cost $6 million.

The CISSS de la Montérégie-Centre is the first establishment in Canada to have obtained it.

The second treatment room equipped with the new accelerator began receiving its first patients on July 8.

The Radixact Accuray System, a third-generation radiotherapy device, has the ability to irradiate tumors with great precision.

Starting this fall, a new guidance technology that tracks tumors during breathing will be integrated into the two new radiotherapy devices.

This advanced method will be particularly useful for treating liver or lung tumors, for example. Thanks to it, treatment margins will be further reduced to spare healthy tissue.

The first of the two linear accelerators arrived at the CICM last January. It can currently treat 27 patients per day. The previous generation device had a capacity of 14 patients per day.

“These state-of-the-art devices will help address the increased incidence of cancer cases caused by the aging population. Their acquisition will have a tangible impact on the population’s access to high-quality care.”
