The campaign to immunize French babies against bronchiolitis has been officially launched since Monday. Two solutions are available to parents: a preventive treatment, administered to the infant before leaving the maternity ward, and a vaccine received by the mother before giving birth.

It is a disease that affects about 30% of children under two years old each winter. This Monday marks the launch of the campaign to immunize babies against bronchiolitis. Last year, the arrival on the market of a preventive treatment was a great success and, this time, two solutions are offered to parents to protect children.

First, there is Beyfortus, a preventive treatment by injection and not a vaccine. The antibodies that protect against bronchiolitis are generally administered to the infant before discharge from the maternity ward and the child is protected about six days after the injection.

Faster immunization… but shorter with the vaccine

Protection, on the other hand, is faster with Pfizer’s Abrysvo vaccine when the serum is received by the pregnant woman. She thus transmits the antibodies to her child directly via the placenta even before birth. The child is therefore immunized, but with this solution, maximum immunity is only ensured for three months, while with Beyfortus, the baby is protected for at least five months.

Finally, there is a price difference. Both are covered at the maternity ward, but if you decide to buy it at the pharmacy, only the vaccine for the mother is fully reimbursed. By choosing Beyfortus, the remaining cost is 280 euros, partly reimbursed by your mutual insurance company.
