Donations are open for lepers

World Lepers Day takes place this Saturday, January 25. On this occasion, a collection of donations is organized by the Order of Malta near supermarkets in Tahiti, until Sunday.

As every year for more than 25 years, the Order of Malta is organizing a collection of donations on the occasion of World Lepers Day. These donations are used, among other things, to offer food packages every month to matahiapo who still bear the scars of the disease. “There are still some patients and former patients in the territory” declares Florent Roy, delegate of the Order of Malta – in Polynesia. In Tahiti, the Lepers’ village located in Orofara is known.

Two people have been detected since the start of the year, there were seven last year. “You have to be in very very very prolonged contact to catch it and that’s why there are almost none left in Polynesia.” explains Florent.

This infectious disease affects the skin but is treatable quite well today, according to the delegate of the Order of Malta. “It is a treatment that is taken. And after a week, more than 80% of the disease is treated. But there remains a small percentage that takes a very long time to eradicate. It’s a daily medication” specifies Florent Roy. In the region, it is Doctor Lam who is specialized in the field and who monitors the patients.
