Press release – 1st assessment of the 2024/2025 vaccination campaign against HPV for 5th grade students in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques (64) from 01/22/2025

The ARS Nouvelle-Aquitaine, in close collaboration with the academic region, Health Insurance, has relaunched the vaccination campaign against papillomavirus (HPV) for 5 year old students.th at the start of the 2024-2025 school year.

The HPV vaccine was introduced into the vaccination schedule for girls in 2006 then for boys in 2021. It is an effective vaccine which protects against the HPVs most often responsible for cancer.

In the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, vaccinations are organized and carried out by the vaccination centers of the Côte Basque Hospital Center (CHCB), the Hospital Center and the Free Information, Screening and Diagnostic Center (CEGIDD). ) of family planning in Pau.

A meeting was held on December 13 at the Elhuyar college in Hasparren to make an initial assessment of this campaign in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department.

Elhuyar College in Hasparren is very invested in the health of its students

Since the launch of this campaign in schools, Elhuyar College has mobilized its teaching teams to inform and raise awareness among students who have not yet been vaccinated. Parents were invited to respond to the vaccination offer by giving digital or paper authorization.

Regular exchanges with the Vaccination Center of the Côté Basque Hospital Center made it possible to organize the session in the best conditions. In total, 13% of 5 year old studentsth of this college were able to benefit from the 1ere dose of HPV vaccine and a student benefited from an MMR catch-up.

This commitment illustrates the college’s desire to address health and prevention issues with its students. Throughout the year, other initiatives around children’s health are also organized thanks to the involvement of the school nurse. Furthermore, local partnerships, notably with the Adoenia Adolescent House, offer guidance solutions for students when necessary and make it possible to develop suitable projects.

HPV vaccination in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department

The final results of this year’s vaccination campaign will only be stabilized at the time of the 2th dose. However, a trend is already perceptible.

The department lists 7,905 students in 5th. Some private colleges did not want to participate in this vaccination campaign. Of the 5,958 students concerned, 975 authorizations were collected compared to 1,209 last year. This decrease is also observed at the regional and national level. In the end, 844 first doses could be administered and 21 second doses, some children having already received a first dose by their attending physician.

For this campaign for the 2024-2025 school year, students can also benefit from catch-ups on certain vaccines:

  • The MMR vaccine (during the 1st HPV dose),
  • The quadrivalent meningococcal vaccine (during the 2th dose).

The parents were able to send the photo of the vaccination records to the Center doctor. In return, he was able to write prescriptions for missed or late vaccinations.

Perspectives

For this new school vaccination campaign, the number of vaccines administered is decreasing compared to the previous year, a trend observed both at the departmental and regional level. However, this drop must be put into perspective in comparison with 2023, because a greater number of vaccinations were carried out this year by treating doctors. In addition, many Hasparren middle school students were already vaccinated when they entered 5th grade.th.

It should also be noted the significant participation of educational establishments located in rural areas, and in particular the following establishments : the Citadelle college in Saint Jean Pied de Port (43% of 5 year old studentsth vaccinated in their college during this campaign), Argia college in Mauléon (37%) or even the Amikuze college in Saint Palais (31%). These indicators demonstrate the interest of this campaign in certain territories of the department. In this context, vaccinations are free for families with no advance payment (cost financed 100% by Health Insurance).

Vaccination sessions for the second doses will be held between April 2 and June 13.

Reopening of the authorization collection platform: parents of students aged 5th can still give their agreement from January 20 until March 10, 2025

To continue to increase the coverage rate, the ARS has reopened the platform for collecting parental authorizations since January 20, 2025.

Parents of students of 5th can authorize free vaccination of their child against HPV during the second visit to the center in spring 2025.

The authorization must be completed before March 10, directly on the HPV website.
