An unexpected birth. Giacomo Paoli, a 43-year-old man from Altopascio in Tuscany, left his home very early in the morning on Wednesday January 15 to buy medicine for vomiting and diarrhea for his wife, Valentina Mecchi.
Once he arrives at the pharmacy, he details his wife’s symptoms and the pharmacist gives her flu medication. “It’s a seasonal illness, it will disappear soon,” he assures him. “Once I got home, my partner said to me: It’s not a virus, I’m about to give birth “, this professional pizza maker tells Corriere Fiorentino. A few minutes later, the couple became parents of a little girl weighing 3,350 kg and measuring 51 cm, called Michela.
“A few months ago, my partner started having a swelling in her stomach. After consulting the doctor, we hypothesized a possible gluten intolerance, given that the symptom appeared especially after Valentina ate products such as bread and pasta,” says Giacomo. In the weeks that followed, no sign alerted the couple, “not even the absence of menstruation given that Valentina had always had an often irregular cycle”.
But on the night of Tuesday January 14 to Wednesday January 15, Valentina felt unwell. “She feels nauseous and vomits. We stay awake and try to understand what it could be but the hours pass and the situation does not change,” says her husband. “Around 6 a.m., I decide and go out to go to the pharmacy, seeing her in pain,” he continues.
“This little body came out on its own”
Giacomo returns with the flu medicine and gives it to Valentina who takes it, but nothing happens until he gets on the bed and his wife, and the latter tells him: “It’s not a virus , I’m about to give birth. » Giacomo then sees his partner turn on her side and spread her legs, from which a small head full of hair emerges.
-“Everything became dark, for a moment I no longer saw or understood anything,” explains the forty-year-old. “This little body came out on its own, with the umbilical cord attached, without making a sound, so much so that I was afraid for a moment that it was a dead fetus,” he continues, before hearing the little girl cry and understanding that “everything was okay”.
The baby and mother were taken to hospital, where Giacomo and Valentina had to quickly find a name for their first child. “The nurses asked us and we had to decide in an instant. We hope we did it well,” quips Michela’s father.
Once the shock wore off, the couple told family, friends and work colleagues, and everyone had difficulty believing it. “My nephew, after seeing a photo of the little girl, asked me: But is she yours? “, he says. “No, she arrived with Amazon,” the new dad replied with humor, who indicates that he is still having trouble realizing what has just happened.
