70 new cases, the epidemic is spreading

The dengue epidemic is increasing in Polynesia. 70 cases were recorded during the first week of January, more than 30 additional cases compared to the last week of December. The majority of these cases are located in the districts of Mahina, Pirae, Papeete, Faa’a, Punaauia.

With the rains, we know: mosquitoes are numerous and the risk of cases of dengue fever is greater. 626 cases have been recorded since 2024. In homes, everyone therefore takes precautions. This is the case of this family from the TeNaho neighborhood, which has already been affected by the disease in the past.

Maeva and those close to her therefore take the problem head on. His daughters have lived here since they were young. Epidemic or not, they have always taken care to prevent the spread of mosquitoes in their homes.

“In the yard, if there are places with trash cans, you have to empty everything that contains water. It’s not easy to cure”

Each epidemic generates a wave of apprehension within the home. Georgina has seen people in the neighborhood suffering from the disease, she wants to avoid going through that at all costs. “It’s scary because afterwards it will attack your children, old and sick people.

Of the 70 new cases in the first week of January, 50 are from Tahiti and the majority from the agglomeration between Mahina, Punaauia and Pirae. The particularity of this epidemic: there are currently no severe cases. However, a sharp increase in the number of infections is expected. “The fact that we did not have any severe cases last year, we imagine that we will enter a phase where, if there are more and more cases, we will finally have cases severe, many more hospitalizations“, explains André Wattiaux, head of the health monitoring center of ARASS, the Regulatory Agency for Health and Social Action.

“We hope that we will be able to prevent deaths but unfortunately for each epidemic, we always have deaths.”

André Wattiaux – head of the ARASS health monitoring center

The public hygiene and health center does not plan any spraying soon, because This is a preventive measure and the epidemic is already too advanced.
