These heart medications slow cognitive decline

The links between vascular health et brain health are required. The heart and the brain share the same vascular systemright? Furthermore, the brain “is a large consumer of energyexplains Dr. Bherer, who works at the Montreal Heart Institute. The blood that circulates in the body is largely used to fuel the brain, since it is very greedy.” Besides, it’s no coincidence, we’re talking about vascular dementia when cognitive decline results from the destruction of the brain tissue due to insufficient blood flow (following a stroke for example).

Take care of your health cardiovascular is thus, we easily understand, one of the ways to take care of your brain. What is less known is that the medications prescribed for cardiovascular diseases also play a role in the appearance or not of the first signs of dementia.

Cognitive decline: it is correlated with taking anticoagulants or hypertensives

THE Swedish doctors of Karolinska Institutet and Lund University sought to precisely define the impact on the cognitive decline medications prescribed for people with cardiovascular disease. The results of their work, published in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia took the data of more than 880,000 people, based on the observation that “cardiovascular risk factors are the main factors of modifiable risk of dementia and it is estimated that 70% of older people have at least one risk factor or cardiovascular disease.”

Not all vascular medications are equal!

Their conclusions? Taking during five years minimum of certain categories of drugs is associated with a lower risk to develop dementia, which can go up to 25% depending on the molecules. Medications that protect against cognitive decline are thus antihypertensivesdiuretics, lipid-lowering drugs (MILP) and oral anticoagulants (OACs). In contrast, antiplatelet medications are associated with a greater risk of developing cognitive decline.
