why is the risk higher when temperatures are negative?

As the cold sets in in , the thermometer sinks into the negative. It is therefore recommended to cover up well outside, as low temperatures can be dangerous for health.

Indeed, our heart and our arteries do not like the cold. Numerous studies have shown that cardiovascular disease increases when temperatures drop. Researchers have also proven that each reduction of one degree is associated with an increase 2% risk of myocardial infarction within the next four weeks.

Our body must mobilize more energy to counteract the effects of the cold and maintain body temperature at 37 degrees. The heart will start to beat faster and harder, to consume more oxygen. The blood vessels will contract and the blood becomes less fluid, promoting coagulation and therefore blood clots causing myocardial infarction.

Pollution, an aggravating factor

It is also not recommended to do sports outside when temperatures are negative. Cardiologists consider that simply walking in the cold would be equivalent to running a 100 meter.

Pollution, associated with cold temperatures, can also increase the risk of heart attacks due to microparticles and nitric oxide. If you have to work outdoors, don’t hesitate to warm up to acclimatize to the cold.

For those who work indoors and are stressed, don’t take the famous cigarette break. The mixture of cold, stress and tobacco is the perfect cocktail for having a heart attack.
