Burnout Syndrome: Impact on quality of life, productivity and risk of chronic depression

Yesenia Durán, clinical psychologist at Hospiten Santo Domingo

SANTO DOMINGO, RD / LesNews – Burnout Syndrome has a significant impact on the quality of life and productivity of individuals, resulting from an accumulation of stress and emotional exhaustion. If this phenomenon is not adequately treated, it can develop into chronic depression.

This was expressed by Yesenia Durán, clinical psychologist at Hospiten Santo Domingo, on the occasion of World Depression Day, celebrated on January 13. She specifies that “burnout is a state of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion caused by chronic stress linked to work or studies, also known as Professional Burnout Syndrome”.

Among the most common causes of this syndrome, Durán mentioned overwork, lack of control over tasks, interpersonal conflicts, a toxic work environment, an imbalance between professional and personal life, lack of recognition, perfectionism, excessive self-demands, as well as difficulty saying no and limited stress management skills.

This condition – she highlighted – affects various aspects of individuals’ lives, such as physical, emotional, social and professional well-being, leading to chronic fatigue, sleep disorders and physical pain.

The consequences of burnout syndrome can lead to chronic illnesses such as anxiety and depression, reduced self-esteem, motivation, increasing pessimism, even isolation and interpersonal and family conflicts, a- she added.

Worse still, said Yesenia Durán, “this can lead to a loss of meaning, a deterioration in the quality of life, an unhealthy lifestyle, a reduction in concentration, creativity at half mast, errors frequent, professional demotivation, as well as a negative work climate, generating economic costs.”

Signs of burnout syndrome include emotional exhaustion, reduced work efficiency, digestive problems, feelings of emptiness, mood fluctuations, social isolation, and increased consumption of drugs. alcohol and tobacco, not to mention absenteeism from work.

Durán points out that the most vulnerable people are often perfectionists and demanding people, those with low self-esteem, highly committed people (workaholics), as well as those suffering from poor stress management, introverts sensitive to criticism, and those lacking a support network, experiencing emotional crises, or with genetic predispositions or physical health problems.

“All of this results from high exposure to stress, a lack of coping strategies, emotional exhaustion and the absence of family or friend support,” she said.

According to this psychology professional, people suffering from burnout syndrome often go through phases of initial enthusiasm, stagnation, frustration and apathy until reaching total burnout, which constitutes a transition to depression.
