Mosquito protection: Should prices be lowered in the event of a chikungunya epidemic?

Chikungunya continues to progress on the island. A transition to the epidemic phase is likely in the coming days. Spray, mosquito net or even diffusers, there are many ways to protect yourself, but this comes at a cost. What budget to protect yourself from mosquitoes when you are an individual?

Mosquito net, citronella candle or even anti-mosquito spray, there are numerous ways to protect yourself from bites. With the potential arrival of a chikungunya epidemic, the question of increasing the prices of these products is on the table. Which does not suit customers.

We must lower the price, but not increase it, life is too expensive“.

In pharmacies, it costs between 8 and 15 euros for a spray. A price which does not seem to have increased at the moment. “You have to buy the right product, effective and at the right price. You should know that the cream is easier to use for areas that are a little more difficult to access. The spray and cream are very good ways to protect yourself against chikungunya“, explains Sabine Leny, pharmacist in Bras-Panon.

On average, for a family of 4 people who would buy sprays, sockets, an anti-mosquito lamp as well as mosquito nets, it would cost around 200 euros.

On the side of elected officials, the situation is worrying. MP Jean-Hugues Ratenon calls for price regulation to guarantee fair access to these essential protections. “It is necessary, as was the case at the time, for the State to act to put in place price blocking. Unfortunately, every time there is a crisis, businesses take advantage of it to increase prices.“.

Between the threat of a chikungunya epidemic and rising prices, protecting yourself could become a challenge for many.
