The streaming market is dominated by American giants such as Netflix, HBO and Amazon Prime Video. In Senegal, Modou Lolly Sarr dreams of a solution of this magnitude.
Wawaw is a digital platform providing access to streaming African cinematic content. The Dakar-based designer start-up was founded in 2024 by Modou Lolly Sarr. It received funding of 7 million FCFA (approximately 11,000 USD) from the General Delegation for Rapid Entrepreneurship of Women and Youth to support its growth.
“To become the main streaming platform for African films, by presenting the best of African cinema and allowing African filmmakers to share their stories with the whole world”, this is the objective stated by the young company.
The solution does not yet have a mobile application. You must go directly to the web platform to create an account and access the film catalog. There are various productions there, from Hollywood blockbusters to Senegalese and African content. In 2024, the start-up has increased its actions to enter into partnerships with African producers to better promote their works.
In addition to streaming, Wawaw also plans to operate in the booking and management of film projects, and in the modernization of production processes. To this end, the company is banking on training 500 young people passionate about cinema in collaboration with the Yennenga Center, teaching them the basics of production and the use of tools.
It also plans to acquire new equipment for this purpose, and ultimately, to produce its own films, like major streaming platforms like Netflix, Crunchyroll and AppleTV. For 2025, Wawaw plans to deploy its Android mobile application and improve its web platform.
