With the closure of the Carré Vilette medical center in Hyères, city doctors are overwhelmed

It was predictable. The closure of the Carré Vilette medical center on December 18, 2024, which welcomed up to 30,000 patients per year, was not without impact on community medicine.

“We are very overwhelmed. The shutdown of the Carré Vilette medical center overburdens the practices even more,” confirms the Dr Guillaume Mouchotte.

At his Hyérois office, this liberal doctor notes “an increase in the number of appointment requests from patients while the schedule cannot multiply”.

Between home visits, retirement homes and the office, we also have to manage the flu epidemic.

More relief in activity

“The Carré Vilette medical center was a valve in my activity that I no longer have. SOS doctors (1) (one of the branches is located in Pyanet, Editor’s note) does the best he can but he cannot absorb the additional load”, analyze the Dr Mouchotte.

An activity under pressure accentuated with the raging flu epidemic.

A report also of the number of work stoppages

This healthcare professional estimates that he has already received five additional emergency patients per day at his office since the start of the epidemic. A volume of activity also accentuated by the issuance of work stoppages.

“Patients need to consult and have a week off work so as not to contaminate other work colleagues. This is in addition to other consultations”explains the practitioner.

This is where the Carré Vilette medical center for unscheduled (non-urgent) care also fully played its role.

Don’t miss the serious case

“When patients could not find places on the schedule, they were supposed to go to Carré Vilette, even if I reassessed them if necessary a few days later. For anything that was a “small flu” without complications, the stoppages of work, this relieved the operation of the medical office”recognizes the Dr Mouchotte.

Liberal health professionals who, in this flow of patients, also know the fear of “miss one or two more serious pathologies”.

Also, this healthcare professional advises patients – if they can – during this epidemic phase, to postpone the non-urgent renewal of prescriptions.

A tense health situation which further legitimizes the project carried out by the Professional Territorial Health Community (CPTS) Hyères – Îles d’Or. It should soon open a day consultation center in premises adjacent to Hyères hospital.

The on-call medical center, which is still operational, has also suffered from the postponement of patients from Carré Vilette. This, like the Sainte-Musse hospital in , is in demand with the winter epidemic.

The white plan which has been in progress since January 3 is an internal mobilization to adapt the organization of services and guarantee continuity of care.

1. When contacted, SOS doctors and the Hyères hospital on-call medical center did not respond to our requests.
