EXERCISE and MUSCLE HEALTH: Does additional electrical stimulation mean more muscle?

The study, A meta-analysis of previously published research on the combination of electrical muscle stimulation and resistance training confirms that this combo ultimately allows for greater muscle mass and strength compared to resistance training alone .

The authors state that neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES: Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), or electrical muscle stimulation for shortuses electrical currents to contract muscles. Stimulation devices are easy to use and widely available on the market for home use.

But many health professionals, like many users, ask themselves the question: “Do these stimulators always provide additional benefits,

when used during resistance training? »

“The results are there, and they are promising”

-

This meta-analysis of 12 studies carried out on the subject, in which participants followed a traditional resistance training program, while using NMES devices, indeed confirms that:

  • using NMES during resistance training leads to greater muscle mass and strength than resistance training alone;
  • if participants’ training periods ranged from 2 to 16 weeks, longer durations brought better results;
  • finally, NMES helps to further improve physical and metabolic health.

Explication : Under normal conditions, the brain activates muscles by sending signals through the nervous system. NMES mimics this process by delivering external electrical currents to nerves, causing muscles to contract, without intervention from the brain. Muscles contract voluntarily and involuntarily, so more.
