The emergency rooms of overwhelmed and the hospital saturated in the middle of a flu epidemic

For the past week, ’s emergency rooms have recorded a significant number of admissions and the service is not empty at the start of 2025. A critical situation when the peak of the flu epidemic has not yet passed.

The emergency rooms at Narbonne hospital are saturated. This phenomenon is the same almost everywhere in , in particular due to the flu epidemic which is raging in the territory at the start of the school year. During the end-of-year holidays, contact between people greatly favored the spread of acute respiratory infections (ARI). “We observe a majority of influenza A, a little influenza B, and a few cases of Covid-19”, explains Alain Peret, head of the emergency department at Narbonne hospital since 2014.

A dramatic situation

The health establishment has therefore not escaped this trend and, for a week already, has been facing a continuous flow of patients. A difficult situation to manage for the first service concerned, the emergency room. “Usually, we hospitalize 20 to 30 people; Friday January 3, it was 49”details Alain Peret. On the intensive care side, the service has adapted and increased from eight to ten beds. This increase, however, led to the temporary elimination of the four continuing care beds.

If the Narbonne emergency chief has no prospects for the future, he reports that “the epidemic peak of the flu has not yet passed in Occitania”. “We must expect to be overwhelmed for three more weeks, until the end of January”continues the health professional, who regrets “this dramatic situation”.

More information to come.
