A first: in the United States, a victim of avian flu has been reported, as the Louisiana State Department of Health announced this Monday, January 6. He had been infected with the H5N1 strain of the “highly pathogenic” virus, “after being exposed to a combination of birds from non-commercial breeding and wild birds”, according to a press release.
The victim, whose identity has not been released, is a man “over the age of 65” who suffered from “underlying medical problems”.
“The extensive public health investigation conducted did not identify any additional cases of H5N1 or any evidence of human-to-human transmission. This patient remains the only human case of H5N1 in Louisiana,” authorities wrote.
On December 18, the United States announced the detection of the first serious case in a human in this state. The Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) specified in a press release that 61 cases of avian flu in humans had been detected by health services.
