As in previous years, winter pathologies, in particular influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (bronchiolitis), are currently in an epidemic phase over most of the country and are generating an expected increase in the consumption of certain medications during this period. the year.
Compared to last winter, the supply situation for amoxicillin and amoxicillin clavulanic acid has significantly improved. Occasional and local tensions may nevertheless arise and stocks are not completely replenished at wholesalers-distributors.
Also, as a precaution and in order to ensure coverage of needs throughout the national territory, the ANSM maintains the measure of exclusive supply of pharmacies by wholesale distributors for pediatric medications based on amoxicillin and amoxicillin/clavulanic acid.
Regarding clarithromycin, supply tensions have continued for 2 months, particularly for the 25mg/mL oral form. Supplies are planned and should allow a gradual improvement in the situation on the ground in the coming weeks.
In this context, the ANSM had asked laboratories marketing oral clarithromycin or tablets to favor the supply of pharmacies by wholesalers-distributors, in order to ensure equitable distribution across the territory. The ANSM has also issued recommendations to ensure the treatment of younger children, in particular those for whom low weight prevents the use of graduated pipettes from 4kg.
In addition, the ANSM recalled the rules for the proper use of clarithromycin and antibiotics in general. Overconsumption and unjustified use of antibiotics are the main causes of the development of antibiotic resistance, which contributes to reducing the effectiveness of antibiotics and where necessary contribute to aggravating situations of tension or stock shortages.
Coverage of the needs of other medications monitored as part of the winter plan, in particular paracetamol and oral corticosteroids, is currently generally ensured.
