The period is favorable for the development of mosquitoes, and with them the circulation of viruses such as chikungunya or dengue. Since August, cases of chikungunya have increased exponentially. The areas concerned are mainly located in the South.
A new outbreak detected in Trois-Mares, in Le Tampon, with 3 cases, is added to those of Saint-Paul (Aigrettes and Hermitage), Grand-Bassin, Ligne-des-400 in Saint-Pierre and Etang-Salé.
The latter remains very active with 20 new cases in one week. They add to the 27 cases already known. 2 new cases were recorded in Grand-Bassin and 1 on Ligne-des-400, during the same week from December 9 to 15. 4 isolated cases were also identified outside of known outbreaks.
From December 9 to 15, 30 new cases of chikungunya were reported in Reunion. Five outbreaks, more or less important, are recorded. In total, 82 cases have been recorded in the department since August 23.
At the start of the following week, 7 cases have already been reported, indicate the health authorities who have not yet “consolidated” all the results. Although management measures have been taken around all the cases, they note that the circulation of the chikungunya virus is intensifying and continuing to disperse.
Vigilance is therefore required during this end-of-year holiday period, which is conducive to gatherings of people. On December 18, the level of the ORSEC plan to combat arboviruses was increased.
The authorities then warned that “ the next few weeks will be crucial in the fight against the spread of the disease “, encouraging everyone to take the right actions to combat the proliferation of mosquitoes.
