A little girl attending a primary school in Normandy died from a serious bacterial infection. This death triggered a major mobilization of health authorities to prevent possible new cases.
The meningitis occurred in a child aged just 7 years old.
A devastating illness
Despite rapid treatment, the condition of this student from Jean-Baptiste Massillon primary school, in Havre deteriorated and she did not survive. Rouen University Hospital reported this case to ARS Normandie.
Faced with this situation, the ARS, in collaboration with National Education, quickly implemented prevention measures. More than 60 people, including 15 students, two teachers and 49 people who had been in close contact with the girl, received preventive antibiotic treatment. This treatment aims to eliminate the bacteria responsible for the disease and prevent its spread.
Symptoms of meningitis
It is important to remember the main symptoms of invasive meningococcal infection: high fever, intense headache, neck stiffness, nausea and vomiting. If in doubt, it is essential to consult a doctor quickly.
In order to support students, teachers and families through this ordeal, a medical-psychological emergency unit has been set up. This unit’s mission is to provide psychological support to people affected by this tragedy.
ARS Normandy is closely monitoring this situation and providing regular information to parents and schools. It is recalled that the meningitis is a contagious disease, but the risks of transmission are limited to close contacts.
