Situation under control

This has not always been the case in recent years. But, despite an increase in cases recently, the respiratory virus situation is under control in the province as the holidays approach. “We are pampered this year, respiratory viruses will not overflow the emergency rooms,” explains the D in an interview.r Luc Boileau, national director of public health for Quebec. But that doesn’t mean we should stop taking precautions. »

Installed for several weeks

Influenza, COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus: the flu season is officially underway, he says. “It will progress over the next few weeks. The holidays are the time of year when people meet the most. There are more people mixing, very young and very old people… So we have to remain more sensitive to the symptoms we may feel. »

Good behaviors

The first thing to do if you feel sick, and if you have a fever, is to pass your turn. “If you are sick, stay home, postpone the party. If we are sick, we don’t see the others,” says the Dr Boileau. For people who value having energy and being fit enough to go out, precautions should be taken. “Don’t hesitate to put on a mask, avoid kissing people and shaking their hands. And watch out for older people, younger people, and people with chronic illnesses. »

No “Stanley Cup” baby

The Dr Boileau urges people to watch out for “Stanley Cup” baby syndrome, which is the habit of kissing a newborn and passing it from one person’s arms to another. “It has no place. Young babies under 6 months are at high risk for respiratory viruses. So we’re not all going to gather around the baby at a party. We protect him. »

Vaccination is progressing

Vaccination rates against the flu or new variants of COVID-19 are more than 50% among people aged 75 and over in Quebec, which is encouraging, says the Dr Boileau. “We have very effective vaccines. For those who are not yet vaccinated, there are plenty of places available in the coming days. Don’t hesitate to go there, it will help people for the rest of the winter. »

The right resources

The Ministry of Health and Social Services reminds that vaccination appointments can be made in all regions of Quebec on Clic Santé. “It is essential to use the right health service according to your needs and thus avoid traveling unnecessarily,” notes the Ministry. Your pharmacy, like 811, is a valuable resource where you can obtain advice and various treatments. Medical clinics, family medicine groups (GMF) and virtual consultations should be favored for non-urgent health problems. »
