This Thursday, December 19, 2024, Public Health France published the epidemiological update for the week of December 9 to 15. It should be noted that Reunion Island is in pre-epidemic mode for bronchiolitis. We publish the press release below (Photo: www.imazpress.com)
– Bronchiolitis (in children under 2 years old)
Health indicators continue to improve. Emergency visits are increasing with a total of 79 visits versus 73 for the previous week. Despite a drop, hospitalizations remain at a high level with a total of 26 versus 31 compared to the previous week.
Nearly 2 visits to the emergency room among children under 2 years of age, all causes combined, are attributable to bronchiolitis with an estimated activity share of 18.5%. 95% of visits to the emergency room and 92% of hospitalizations are attributable to children under 1 year
In view of the health context, Reunion is entering the pre-epidemic phase of bronchiolitis.
Concerning virological surveillance, the circulation of RSV increased with a positivity rate of 18% in W50.
– Acute respiratory infections and influenza viruses
Emergency visits for “flu-like illness” remained stable. In S50, emergencies totaled 39 visits for this reason versus 42 in S49. The number of hospitalizations was 7 hospitalizations compared to 9 the previous week.
The share of emergency activity for a “flu syndrome” remained less than 1% of total activity.
In community medicine, Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) remained stable with an activity share of 3.6% in W50 compared to 3.5% in W49. The share of activity for IRA was above the 2013-2023 average.
Virological surveillance in S50 identified circulation of influenza viruses with very low intensity and mainly A(H1N1)pdm09 type viruses. The positivity rate continued to decline with 3% of tests positive for influenza viruses in W50 versus 11% in W49.
– Acute gastroenteritis (GEA)
In W50, the number of visits to emergency departments of all ages for reasons of gastroenteritis was stable after three weeks of decline. The number of passages was 65 in S50 versus 63 in S49. The number of hospitalizations remained stable with 7 hospitalizations in W50 compared to 5 in W49.
In children under 5 years old, the number of visits to the emergency room for gastroenteritis increased slightly. Thirty-eight passages due to gastroenteritis were recorded in
S50 versus 31 passages in S49. The number of hospitalizations after a visit to the emergency room was stable with 1 hospitalization in W50 versus 2 in W49.
In W50, the share of emergency activity among those under 5 years old for gastroenteritis increased moderately compared to the previous week (5.3% in W50 vs 4.7% in W49).
In community medicine, the share of activity for acute diarrhea was stable with 2.4% share of activity in W50 versus 2.3% in W49. It remained below the average for the years 2013-2023. Figure 7. Weekly number of emergency visits and share of activity for GEA, less than 5 years old,
– COVID-19
In S50, emergency room consultations for COVID-19 reasons increased but remained at a very low level. In W50, 8 patients consulted the emergency room for reasons of COVID-19 versus 2 patients the previous week. Four new hospitalizations for reasons of COVID-19 were notified in S50.
Virological surveillance implemented with virology data from the CHU microbiology laboratory (CNR Arbovirus Associated, CNR Respiratory Virus Associated, Reunion Island showed a very low positivity rate (TP) for COVID-19 in W50. In W50, only 3 positive tests among 187 tests, i.e. a TP of 1.6% vs. 3 positive tests among 158 tests in S49, i.e., a TP of 1.9%.
– All-cause mortality
In S48, the number of observed deaths of all ages and all causes was 104 people. Compared to the previous week, the number of deaths observed was increasing (n=91 in W47). The number of deaths observed in W48 was lower than the expected number of deaths (n=112).
Among those over 65, the number of deaths observed in W48 (n=70) was lower than the expected number of deaths (n=85). This figure was a moderate increase compared to what was observed in S47 (67 deaths observed).
