This vegetable is the most contaminated by pesticides. You’d better buy it organic

If you care about the quality of your food, here’s what you need to know to consume wisely.

An in-depth study on food contamination

Each year, the EWG publishes its ranking of the most contaminated fruits and vegetables, based on the analysis of 46 varieties among the most consumed in the world. This research highlights pesticide residues that persist even after washing. Result ? Spinach tops the list among vegetables. Their fibrous structure and high water content favor the absorption of chemical substances used in conventional agriculture.

For a healthier diet, opt for organic spinach is highly recommended. According to experts, local organic grocery stores are an ideal alternative to reduce exposure to pesticides.

The most affected vegetables and fruits

Besides spinach, other foods are at the top of the ranking of contaminated products:

  • Kale (or kale) : in second position, this green vegetable, appreciated for its nutritional qualities, also accumulates large quantities of pesticides.
  • Red and green peppers : these versatile vegetables complete the podium, rich in taste but also in chemical residues.

On the fruit sidestrawberries take the top spot. They are followed by:

  • Strawberries;
  • Grapes;
  • Peaches;
  • Pears;
  • The nectarines.

These delicate fruits, often eaten raw, are particularly exposed to pesticides, making buying organic preferable.

Good news for economical food lovers: not all fruits and vegetables need to be purchased organic. Carrots, mushrooms and sweet potatoes naturally contain fewer pesticides thanks to their structure and cultivation methods.

On the fruit side, watermelons, mangoes and kiwis are among the least contaminated. The latter often benefit from thick skins, protecting them from chemical treatments.

Consume better, without breaking the bank

Faced with the rise in prices of organic products, this study makes it possible to establish priorities:

  • Invest in organic spinach, strawberries or peppers to minimize chemical residues.
  • Favor the conventional carrots or kiwisconsidered safe options.
