Here is the ideal sandwich to stop your hangover, according to a British doctor

Difficult tomorrows are not necessarily treated with paracetamol or mint herbal tea but with the plate at breakfast. Details from a general practitioner.

The end of year holidays are fast approaching and perhaps so is the migraine that accompanies them. This headache, not really pathological, and the associated digestive problems, are symptomatic of the famous “hangover”, a sign that you have clearly not drunk this champagne in moderation. Before rushing to the medicine cabinet or drawing out grandmother’s tips, British general practitioner Zoe Williams has some advice: take care of your breakfast. The one who is also a columnist on the set of the show This Morning on the ITV channel, shared the ideal anti-hangover recipe with our colleagues at Daily Mail Tuesday December 10.

Stock up on proteins, mineral salts and vitamins

As Dr Zoe Williams reminds us, it is indeed very important to eat the day after a drunken evening. “Breakfast contains the perfect combination of nutrients needed to restore the balance between salts, sugars and proteins that you may have lost after drinking too much,” she emphasizes. In addition, eating well also helps reduce certain symptoms related to hangovers. According to the general practitioner, the nausea that follows a drunken evening is mainly linked to low blood sugar levels. “As the liver is less effective in helping to regulate blood sugar, the body gives priority to expelling alcohol,” she explains.

So what should you put on your plate to avoid hypoglycemia, or worse, repainting the kitchen walls? A sandwich. But not just any one. First take a loaf of semi-wholemeal flour. According to the general practitioner, it has a less pronounced odor than special cereal breads and therefore limits the risk of nausea. This bread is also an excellent source of fiber and, to a lesser extent, protein, which offer “a combination of both immediate and delayed energy”, necessary to get in shape all day long.

The interior of this sandwich must also give pride of place to other ingredients, more enriched in proteins, because these “contain an essential amino acid called lysine which accelerates the breakdown of alcohol in the liver”, assures the Dr. Zoe Williams. In the fresh section, the general practitioner, against all expectations, favors bacon. And for good reason, this pork bacon being very salty and therefore rich in sodium, it helps to replenish some of the essential minerals lost due to the amount of urine and excessive sweating caused by heavy alcohol consumption. In addition, according to a study carried out in 2009 by the University of Newcastle, bacon helps to restore the functioning of neurotransmitters in the brain, damaged by excess alcohol, and to recover better, reports the professional of health. However, opt for moderation. As Dr Zoe Williams reminds us, ingesting bacon (like any meat diet, especially processed red meat) should remain occasional because of its carcinogenic risk.

Another protein to add to our snack: an egg. Hard, flat or boiled, it doesn’t matter, this “hero of the dish”, as Dr. Williams calls him, turns out to be a veritable mine of nutrients. It contains vitamin B12, essential for nervous system health, vitamins A and D, and an amino acid called cysteine whose role helps break down acetaldehyde, a toxic component of alcohol. And to perfect this tasty sandwich, the general practitioner advises adding avocado, which provides “extra healthy fats” to maintain energy, and important vitamins and minerals, including potassium.

Stay hydrated

As for drinks, alcohol should obviously be banned at breakfast (no, we don’t cure evil with evil), and water is the best way to rehydrate. A comforting cup of tea also works, suggests Zoe Williams.

At the end of the interview, the health professional gives other advice to protect yourself from this hangover and avoid it as much as possible: no alcohol on an empty stomach, drink plenty of water during the evening and afterwards, even during the night, so as not to dehydrate the body. Also, the general practitioner invites you to rethink your alcohol consumption, to reduce it by turning as much as possible to alcohol-free or to drinks with a low alcohol content – such as beer and cider. You know the drill: alcohol abuse is dangerous for your health.
