The flu has arrived in Brittany
The flu epidemic is gaining ground. Data from Public Health France shows a clear increase in flu activity in cities and in hospitals and in all age groups. Indeed, four regions are now in the epidemic phase and eight (including Brittany) in the pre-epidemic phase. At the same time, although not very active, Covid-19 remains present. In this context, it is important, particularly for vulnerable people, to be vaccinated as soon as possible: it is the most effective way to prevent serious forms of these diseases. A period of around fifteen days is necessary before the vaccine provides effective protection.
Some numbers: Each year, influenza affects 2 to 4 million people in France and causes 20,000 hospitalizations and 10,000 deaths. Covid-19 has affected 36 million people in France since the start of the epidemic and 170,000 deaths (SpF data as of June 2023).
Remobilization necessary to protect the most vulnerable
Vaccination campaigns against seasonal flu and covid-19 began on October 15. But the latest data from Health Insurance indicate that it is essential to remobilize around these campaigns.
This year, more than 17.2 million people were invited by Health Insurance to be vaccinated against these two viruses. For these people, flu vaccination is 100% covered upon presentation of the Vitale card and letter from Health Insurance. More than a quarter of the Breton population was invited.
To date, even if Brittany records a better rate of use of influenza vaccination, only 32.25% of the population has been vaccinated compared to 39.3% at the same time in 2023.
