Humans feed abundantly on the eggs of different animal species, whether terrestrial or marine. However, we very rarely eat turkey eggs, a poultry that is very similar to a chicken.
Man, a big consumer of eggs
Most of the time, humans consume chicken eggs, an ingredient of animal origin among the cheapest on the market. The latter are also very nutritious and constitute a complete source of protein. However, other poultry and bird species provide eggs for human consumption. We can cite among others the ostrich, the quail, the duck and the pigeon.
Furthermore, the eggs of other animal species enter our diet, very often fish: cod, capelin, salmon, trout, etc. However, reptile eggs are not recommended because they potentially contain bacteria dangerous to humans in addition to being quite poor in nutrients. However, the eggs of certain species (crocodile, iguana, snake, turtle, etc.) are still consumed in certain countries, notably China and Vietnam.
On supermarket shelves, we find turkey meat, the female turkey, a poultry quite similar to chicken. However, turkey eggs are much rarer. Is it possible to eat it? The answer is yes. However, it is not so simple, as explained by the magazine It interests me in 2023.
Qualities and defects
First of all, you should know that turkey eggs are a very good source of nutrients. They indeed contain so-called high-quality proteins, lipids, vitamins and essential minerals. These eggs are particularly rich in B vitamins, notably B2 (riboflavin) and B12. There are also certain minerals such as iron, selenium and zinc. Let us also mention the presence of omega-3, despite higher calorie content to those of chicken eggs.
Despite these qualities, humans very rarely consume turkey eggs. In the past on certain farms, this type of egg has been declared unfit for contamination, in particular due to the risk of bacterial contamination (salmonella). However, there are also other reasons, notably the frequency of laying, and therefore productivity. In fact, turkeys lay only one to three eggs per week while chickens give one egg per day. Furthermore, the question arises in cooking: turkey eggs have a thicker shell and membrane. This makes these eggs more difficult to break and use. In addition, existing recipes were mainly designed for chicken eggs.
In reality, turkeys are overwhelmingly raised for their meat, while their eggs are reserved for reproduction. However, you should know that by searching the Internet, it is possible to find a few platforms that sell turkey eggs.
